In accordance with Part A Section  A-1I/5 of the Standard of Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW Code) for seafarers as amended which established the mandatory minimum requirements for the certification of ratings forming part of a navigational watch and able seafarer deck (A-II/5) at the support level.

What kind of People takes the STCW Mandatory Safety Training program?
Persons/people, who before being assigned to ship board duties or persons assigned, employed or engaged on a seagoing ship other than passengers’ vessel that require knowledge and competence in other to effective carry out deck functions on board a sea going vessel.          

What Kind of people take the Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Safety Course? 
Persons/people who work or intends to work in the maritime and/or oil & gas sector or industries especially those who are employed to work on board a marine vessel/ship with deck responsibilities/watch.  


What will I gain from this qualification?  
Participant at this course will gain the knowledge and competence including practical knowledge in ensuring that seafarer’s carryout their functions on board a sea going vessel effectively.

What does the course cover?
Participants will gain knowledge and understanding  in general seamanship duties, safety procedures for mooring and Anchoring, handling and splicing of ropes, cargo hatches, rigging gangway, pilot ladder, understanding of ship lights, shapes and sound signals and ability to communicate with other officers on the watch of a navigational duties.      

Course delivery: Using a combination of classroom syndicate exercises, interactive activities and practical training demonstrations.

Entry qualification?
Candidate must have six (6) months seagoing experience in a deck capacity, a valid medical certificate, the STCW mandatory safety induction training for mariners/seafarer’s certificate, a watch keeping certificate and a reasonable standard of written English.                                           

Course Duration: Ten (10) working days running from Monday through Friday.  

Career Development: The EDH course meets the requirements for progression to the acquisition of the seafarers certification of ratings forming part of an able seafarer and progression to obtaining the certificate of competency (COC).

Assessment.                                                                                                         The course is assessed at the end of the final day
