In accordance with Part A Section A-VI/4-1 of the Standard of Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW Code) for seafarers as amended which established the mandatory minimum requirements and standard of competence in medical first aid

What kind of People takes this course ?

Persons/people, who before being assigned to ship board duties or persons assigned, employed or engaged on a seagoing ship that are required to provide medical first aid in the event of medical emergencies on board a ship/vessel/marine craft.        

What Kind of people takes the Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Safety Course? 
 Persons/people who work or intends to work in the maritime and/or oil & gas sector or industries especially those who are employed to work on board a marine vessel/ship with deck responsibilities/watch.  


What will I gain from this qualification?
  Participant at this course will gain the knowledge, understanding and competence including practical knowledge in the application of immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness on board, they will be able to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board.

What does the course cover?
The course covers the various procedure and immediate action to take in the event of a medical emergency. Understanding the content and use of a standard first aid kit/content, anatomy of human including the human body structure and functions, toxicology hazards aboard ship, procedure for the examination of patients, spinal injuries, burns, scalds, and effects of heat and cold. Treatment and care of fracture, dislocation and muscular injuries, Medicare of rescue person, radio medical advice/telemedicine, pharmacology, sterilization, cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia and psychological/psychiatric problems.

Course delivery: Using a combination of classroom syndicate exercises, interactive activities and practical training demonstrations.                                                                                                               

Entry qualification?             

Candidate must have completed a basic elementary first aid course or the STCW mandatory safety /induction training program and a reasonable standard of written English.                                           

Course Duration: Three (3) working days

Career Development: The Medical first aid course on completion will provide the basis for seafarers or mariners to progress to take or sit for the Advance Medicare program.


Assessment: The course is assessed at the end of the final day
