In accordance with Part A Section A-V/1-1-1 of the Standard of Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW Code) for seafarers as amended which established the mandatory minimum requirements and standard of competence in oil tanker familiarization. The standard of competence required for ship board duties for marine ratings, officers, masters and chief mates is defined under the code

What kind of People takes this course?

Persons/people, who before being assigned to ship board duties or persons assigned, employed or engaged on a seagoing ship including ratings, officers, masters and chief mates that are required to safely perform and monitor all cargo operations and familiarity with physical and chemical properties of oil cargoes as well as respond to emergencies on a tanker ship/vessel

 What will I gain from this qualification?
Participant at this course will gain the knowledge, understanding and competence including practical knowledge in the application of cargo, types of cargo, characteristics of cargo, toxicity and others hazards , safety measures, pollution prevention, emergency operations, cargo equipment and operations and understanding their duties and responsibilities,

What does the course cover?
The course is divided into two parts

Level 1: which is a tanker familiarization course  or under an approved seagoing service for ratings and officers assigned specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo and cargo equipment.

Level 2: A specialized training program for masters, chief engineer officers, chief mates, second engineer officer and any person with immediate responsibilities for loading, discharging and care in transit or handling of cargo on oil tanker, chemical tanker or gas tanker on which they serve.

  • Development of Tankers
  • Types of cargoes (Oil and Chemical)
  • Tanker terminology/Rules and Regulations
  • Toxicity and other hazards/Hazard Control
  • Safety equipment and protection of personnel
  • Pollution prevention
  • Emergency operations
  • Cargo equipment/operations
  • Cargo loading and unloading

Course delivery: Using combination of competent and experienced instructors, classroom syndicate exercises interactive activities and practical training demonstrations.                                                                                                               

Entry qualification? 
This course is open to all seafarers who are to be assigned specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo and cargo equipment on tankers, and who have completed an approved shore-based firefighting course and reasonable standard of written English.                        

Course Duration: Three (3) working days

Career Development: The Advance Medicare will provide a basis for participant to develop a career in medical first aid or progression to take more advance professional first aid courses outside the STCW convention as amended.

Assessment:The course is assessed at the end of the final day
